Parent Skills Audit
We would like to put together a list of parents who have particular skills who would be willing to support the school from time to time. I have attached to this Newsletter a Parent Skills Audit. Please could you complete this and return it to the office if you would be interested in helping us in this way.

World Book Day
It is World Book Day on Thursday 4th March. We will be celebrating this by having a Global Book Day where we will be looking at books from other countries, books in other languages and books from other cultures. The children will be taking part in a variety of activities which will address global and citizenship issues as well as different types of story books. If you would like to be involved and share a book from your own first language or culture please do approach your child’s class teacher or let the school office know.

School Council
School Council continues to meet and discuss the current issues in school. At present they are preparing for their ‘Swear Aware Day’ on Thursday 25th February. Please do talk to your children about this to support the work of the School Council.

Thinking Day

On Monday 22nd February it is the Girl Guiding Association World Thinking Day. On this day Girl Guides and Girl Scouts everywhere throughout the world remember each other and reaffirm their commitment to international friendship and understanding. This year it is the association’s centenary year and to mark this special occasion we would very much like our Rainbows, Brownies and Girl Guides to wear their uniform to school on World Thinking Day.

Attendance has shown a slight improvement in the last few weeks. Well done to all our families who attend school punctually and regularly.

Year 5
Yesterday I was invited by Year 5 to attend a class debate that they were having about lengthening the school day by 30 minutes. The children had 3 proposals – firstly to cut the lunch hour by 30 minutes, secondly to start 30 minutes later and thirdly to finish 30 minutes later. I was extremely impressed by the quality of the arguments put forward, the language used and the excellent behaviour and participation of the whole class. The children were obviously keen to stay at school longer so that they could have more learning time. I would like to thank Year 5, Mr Madden, Mrs Lawlor and Ms Gill for inviting me to be involved in such an interesting activity.

Haiti
Thank you for your generous donations for Haiti. We have managed to raise over £200 with the Mufti Day last week. We will be sending this off to the DEC so that it can be used to help the people in Haiti during this time.

Open Day
Our Spring Term Open Day is on Wednesday 24th February from 9.30 to 11.00 a.m.  This is an opportunity for anyone who is considering Byron for their child to visit during the school’s working day.  If you or somebody you know would like a guided tour, please join us at this time.

Urgent Request
If anybody has any spare outgrown children’s trousers, skirts or tights, we would be pleased to receive donations.  They will be gratefully received to cover mishaps in Reception class!

Suggestions Box and Feedback
We have a suggestions box in the reception area outside the school office and would welcome positive input and ideas from you or your children (anonymous or attributed!) for matters relating to the school or school activities.

We have also included a tear off slip at the bottom of this newsletter if you would like to make any comments or suggestions for Byron. Please return these to the school office.
