Byron Primary School 05 Mar 2010

Number 11 - 5th March 2010

Parent Skills Audit
We have had very few of the Parents Skills Audits returned that we sent home before half term. I am sure that there are many of you out there who could support the school in some way and help us develop what we can do for the children. If you have lost your form please do call in and ask for another one!

School Council
The members of School Council have been working hard to perfect a whole school assembly and will be performing this on Monday 8th March.

The theme is Name Calling and Amba Lanning (Year 5) and Johnny Watson (Year 6) are taking the lead roles!!

Next week we will discussing ways in which we can promote Sport Relief on Friday 19th March.  Mr Madden is organising a miles walk in fancy dress to help raise money and has asked school council to be involved in deciding what “theme” the children at Byron will be dressed as.

Sports
We’ve had a very successful year of sport so far at Byron this year, which was continued by our Year 5 and 6 football team, who have finished the season in a fantastic fourth place in the league, two places higher than last year!  They also made it to the quarter finals of the Croydon Schools Cup, which means they were in the last eight teams in the whole of Croydon!  Well done to Johnny, Jade B, Conor, Luke W, Danny-John, Thomas, Ryan, Chloe, Ian, Mat, Mayur and Luke L who all played in school matches this season.

Away from the football pitch, Byron also took a team to last week’s Sports Hall Athletics competition at Sutton Indoor Arena.  The team; Sophie, Abigail, Amba R, Jade S, Katie, Tilly, Ian, Conor, Daniel C, Ray and Steely, took part in a range of running, jumping and throwing events and Mr Madden even had a go in the teachers and helpers race.  Byron finished eighth out of the twelve participating schools, and as well as this great achievement, the organisers were unanimous in declaring Byron’s children the most enthusiastic supporters of their team-mates.  My ear drums are still recovering a week later!

There’s plenty more sport coming our way in the next few weeks, with Years Five and Six taking part in a Lacrosse festival this week, and Sport Relief coming soon for the whole school.

PS – If you shop at Tesco or Sainsbury’s, we are currently collecting their school vouchers.  The more vouchers we can get, the better equipment we will be able to afford!

Egg Race
Six Year 5 children (Keshav Krishnan, Meredith Movel, Laura Sherlock, Luke Wilkshire, Helena Griffith and Amba Lanning) took part in the Primary Science challenge held at Riddlesdown High School last week.  They had a fantastic time and will receive certificates for their efforts.  Very many thanks to the two wonderful parents who so kindly gave up their time to take them to the event.

Marie Curie Pots of Care
This year we have been raising money for Marie Curie.  Your children will bring home daffodils they have grown in school with an envelope.

Please return any envelopes to school no later than Wednesday 24th March 2010.

Healthy Schools
Please can I remind Key Stage 2 children that they are only allowed to have healthy fruit snacks at playtime. We have noticed that crisps and biscuits are being eaten during morning play. If we see children eating unsuitable snacks we will ask them to put them in their bags and take them home. Please do support us in our Healthy School’s work.

Spring Lunch
We are inviting parents to come to a Spring Lunch with their children on Wednesday 31st March. The cost will be £3.00. The menu includes Roast Lamb, stuffing and gravy or Spring Vegetable Wrap with Cheese, vegetables and Easter cake. If you would like to join us please can you let the school office know by Monday 15th March.

World Book Day
This day went really well and the children enjoyed looking at a range of books from different countries. Thank you to everyone who came to read with their children and to share books in our story tent!

Entering and Leaving the School Building
Since the snowy weather, we have slipped into bad habits!  Please use the designated doors in the mornings and at the end of the day. This is really important as we need to know where people are on school premises.

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children must be taken by an adult to their classrooms by walking through both sets of doors in the covered way near the playground toilets to access the door at the top of the steps next to Year 2. Alternatively, you can walk round the outside of the playgrounds and up the steps to this door. Reception children must be taken through their outside area to the Reception cloakroom door. Doors for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will be open from 8.55 until 9.05.

Please do not walk through the hall to the classrooms or when leaving the building after taking children to their classrooms.

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 must enter the building through the door in the playground near the outside toilets. This door will be opened at 8.55. From Year 3, the children should go their classrooms independently.

Please do not come in through the door by the office (unless you arrive late!) or leave the building via this door unless you need to speak to a member of staff.

Thank you very much for your cooperation with this.

Suggestions Box and Feedback
We have a suggestions box in the reception area outside the school office and would welcome positive input and ideas from you or your children (anonymous or attributed!) for matters relating to the school or school activities.

ICT - March 2010...

E-Safety Update
February 10th was the date for the annual Safer Internet Day which is organised by Insafe to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world. The focus of this year’s campaign was "Think B4 U post" and this correlated well with the work we are doing on E-Safety at Byron.

Your child's digital footprint...
IS YOUR CHILD AWARE OF THEIR OWN DIGITAL FOOTPRINT?

It is worth making sure that your child understands and knows that once any information is posted on the internet – through gaming sites, messaging sites, social sites such as Facebook or Club Penguin, they have effectively lost control over it.

This means that photos, videos, phone numbers and messages all can be copied, edited, pasted in other forms, passed on, searched for or retrieved to be used by anybody else in any country of the world in possession of a link to the internet and can be used however this person chooses to use the data.

See www.saferinternet.org for more details about Safer Internet Day and keeping your child safe online.

Byron's Frontier
Children in Year 6 now have full access to Byron’s new Managed Learning Environment and we are encouraging the children to log in regularly to check for updates to support their learning. This will, over the course of the next school year, be rolled out to all classes. In the meantime, if your child is in Year 6 or is in the Friday computer club – do ask them to show you their work on the website. They are extremely proud of what they are doing!
